By Investing in our Nation’s Youth We Secure a Progressive America

The day after the midterm decisions, the Dawn Development gave a statement named "We are so damn glad for youngsters." It wasn't in celebration. Instead, the youth-drove development of climate change activists gave a striking challenge: "[O]ur leaders should invest in us — from running candidates who battle for the issues that matter most to our generation, to delivering strategy at the federal level that make our lives better, to putting cash into critical youth organizing endeavors that have historically been undervalued."

Dawn made a point most progressive leaders have overlooked: Youngsters are tired of being taken for granted and they won't tolerate it anymore.

Youngsters played a critical job in the new races. Invigorated youthful electors halted the anticipated wave of far-right triumphs, setting the stage for a still unsure battle for control of Congress. According to day-after estimates from CIRCLE at Tufts College's Jonathan M. Tisch School of Urban Life, 27% of Americans ages 18-29 casted a ballot in the midterms. That's the second-most noteworthy youth turnout for a midterm political race in 30 years. Youngsters, particularly Black and Latinx youth, casted a ballot overwhelmingly for candidates with progressive platforms.

In any case, the job of youngsters in decisions is only one indicator of their potential power — a power that establishment leaders of the progressive development chronically excuse, under-resource, and undermine. This leaves the development with untapped energy that could reinforce its viability now while cultivating the up and coming generation of leadership.

We disregard history when we keep the power from getting youngsters.
